Frame construction jig.
To All Members:
This post is to notify everyone on the list that we are offering
assembly jigs for the F&CC box car project.  The jigs assist the
builder in making sure the underframe is square and level during
assembly, and they provide proper spacing of the longitudinal sills
and needle beams.  Pictures of the jigs can be seen in the "Files"
section of this group under "Frame_Jigs".  Vance Bass assembled the
underframe shown in the pictures with wood from the local hobby shop.
He cut, glued, and assembled the frame in under 10 minutes.
The jigs are designed to allow the modeler to build either a
"scale" underframe using 1/4" and 3/16" strip wood, or a "budget"
underframe using all 1/4" wood.  The jigs can be used to build either
the F&CC box car or an F&CC 30' flat car simply by rotating the jigs
end for end.  The only difference is the spacing of the needle beams
from the end sills.  There is a ledge to hold the needle beams in
place so they, too, will be properly spaced and perpendicular to the
underframe.
Vance Bass designed the jigs, and has graciously allowed us to
market them.  They are made of 1/8" baltic birch plywood, and press
fit together.  They are available from Fall River Productions for
$20.00 per set (two jigs) plus &4.50 for shipping.  If you would like
to order a set, or need more information, please contact us off line
at fallriver@u...

    Thank you.

"Aristocraft #89101, $16.95 per pair.  This truck is the old Delton freight
car truck, and it matches the wheelbase perfectly, AND the sideframe shape nearly exactly, in 1/20.3, for this specific F & CC boxcar.   Talk about serendipity, a long defunct 1/24th manufacturer whose trucks are now made by a 1/29th powerhouse, being correct for 1/20.3!!!  All you who model 48" wheelbase diamond archbar equipped roads (like the C & S) could use these too.

These Aristocraft trucks will require Sierra Valley Enterprises' 26" metal
wheels, which are available in unplated steel, plated steel, or blackened.
Gary, quoted prices of $10.90 for 2 trucks and $5.90 for 2 axles.

ALL boxcar kits will include bolsters designed to fit this truck, and ALL
boxcar kits will include my typical laser cut brake hanger and brake beams
specially designed to fit this truck, along with brake shoes, and bolt pads.
My journal lids are too small, so maybe Hartford's will work, in which case,
perhaps he will then add them to the car hardware detail package he is
planning.  More information on that to follow.  These Aristocraft trucks have
rudimentary journal lids molded in place, but add-on pieces will bring them
alive."

Decals and Logo development

Larry Larsen has created the art and now the decals for F&CC locos,
passenger cars, box 1, box 2, flats, tank cars, and cabooses. He has  also done the Victor Gold Mining gon sets.

Larry further writes...

"The F&CC had two different schemes for the box cars, one with the herald, one without and initials only. The herald was deffinately done in two different ways as well. Often when a modeller draws the plans
for a car, the lettering is the last to be thought about or done. This brings
out many errors that can occur.

The F&CC was in business and lettering their cars before the common use of standard stencils (stencils were in common use around the mid '20s). These cars were painted by sign painters hired by the railroads. That's why you can see slight differences one car to another. The F&CC text style is a combination of that railroad roman used by the DSP&P and
the D&RG. A bit more flair to the serifs, but not too much. The painters would use "puff drawings" or "powder prints". These were (are, Jeff at the D&S uses them for special lettering jobs) large pieces of paper that had been drawn on then a cookie cutter type tool was used to trace the lettering putting holes in the paper. Then the paper is placed on the loco or car and a porous bag of red or yellow powder is bounced on the paper. This leaves a dotted line where the lettering is to go and an appoximation of what it's to look like. Then all bets were off as the painter used his style and expertise in finishing off the job."
