Tempe Town Lake on a Monday Morning [Holiday Morning that is...]. We went to the lake to fish. I forgot about an UP line going over the Lake [actually the Salt River]. We were greated by two UP freights that morning. These trains literally run over you! When you stand under the bridge - the engines go directly over you and you can see everyting as the bridge is "see through" from beneath.
The above short freight was being pulled by a GP-38-3. The old Southern Pacific engine behind it still sported the blood nose colors.
The boys didn't catch anything but it was a great morning to spend with the gang and see a few trains also.
2nd Freight. This one stopped on the bridge waiting for the go ahead.
The Salt River is dry 99% of the time. This section of the river is dammed by what is analogous to two large inner tubes. Really. They can be deflated to let water in or out. Officially, it is Tempe Town Lake. Very nice area adjacent to Arizona State University and Downtown Tempe.
I was struck that all the modes of transportation that are within a short distance of each other while fishing here that nice morning. The Lake, the freeway, the rails and the Salt River is the glide path for Sky Harbor Airport - intriguing....At one time - we had planes flying overhead, trains passing by, the freeway right across the river and the boaters... Modern times, for sure.
