Here is a pretty good place to see a lot of photos and see what this indoor track hobby is all about...

I found a great site that has lots of fantastic slot car setups.  It is interesting to see another hobby that is very similar to train running.  The car Layouts can be very professional looking.  Here are some photo links.

There are a myriad of slot car makers.  Most are set up for 1:32.  Carrera is leading the pack in 1:24 sets.  The cars on the right are Nascar from Scalextric.  I have a couple of street hot rods coming that are Carrera.  One is the Pontiac GTO - 1966.  HOT...

Carrera doesn't make NASCAR vehicles so you will have to look to some of the other manufacturers.

Now think of the possiblities for some of the indoor Large Scale train layout crowd!  Cars with tyour trains!

Luckily the spare bedroom was just about devoid of furniture so that has become the race room much to my wifes consternation.  The Layout is a Carrera "Avus" set.  The place I ordered it from was wonderful and they swappe out the cars for me as I wanted something more flashy looking than the cars that the set came with.  The best deals I have found is an outfit down in Texas....Slot Car World.  They were just plain wonderful, friendly, patient and it was free shipping!  All the boys are good racers.  Well, we have had plenty of wrecks but these cars are built tough.
So in thinking about what I liked to do with my Dad when I was growing up - I recalled the Strombecker slot car set we had.  It seems that we had that thing set up all the time...probably not that much but boy we had it in the middle of the floor until my mom go tired of walking over it....

I did a lot of internet research and read up on the various sets. I think Carrera makes some of the best sets and cars.  I then did a search for the best deals.  I got some extra track, a starter set [one of the bigger ones] and two extra cars.  The kids love me!

Here is the ground eye view of two Carrera 1:24 race cars.  These things are cerainly a lot bigger than the old 1:32 scale cars my Dad and I raced PLUS a lot better. The headlights and brakelights work.  Good for night driving.  On the left is the "Batmobile" - the Panoz Esperante GTR-1.  The prototype was FAST. Powered buy a Ford V8 - speed was a mere 191 mph.  On the right is the Porsche GT1 Evo.

Durn Cat, Zoomer!  Typical feline always getting in the way.  He wreaked havoc on my poor train layout this Christmas.  And without even thinking - he stops a car while "grooming".  Sons of beetches....Bumpassas!
